About gender diversity and identity

The term ‘transgender’ is commonly used to describe anyone whose gender identity does not align with the gender recorded on their birth certificate. Gender identity refers to a person’s deeply held, internal sense of who they are.

A person classified as female at birth who identifies as a man may describe themselves as trans, a trans man or a man. Similarly, a person classified as male at birth who identifies as a woman may use the label trans, a trans woman or a woman. Some people identify as non-binary gender, which means they do not identify as entirely male or female. Some people choose not to use any of these descriptions.

Sexuality is not a factor that necessarily determines or relates to gender identity. The sexuality of transgender people can include being gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, asexual or heterosexual, or some people may use another term or choose not to categorize their sexuality.

It is important to understand that the gender a person identifies with is their true gender (regardless of their birth record) and must be respected.

The discrimination or harassment of a person because they are transitioning gender is unlawful discrimination. Managers must communicate and model acceptable behaviour. Transphobic6 behaviour is not tolerated at [the company].

Managers should communicate and model appropriate and respectful behaviour. Discrimination will be dealt with in the same way as any other unacceptable behaviour.
